Unconventional resource services from SGS – explore, test and develop your unconventional resources to unlock their full potential

Unconventional resources comprise a broad group of hydrocarbon resources characterised by low porosity and low permeability source rocks. Recovering commercially viable quantities of oil and gas trapped in these rocks can be costly, requiring extensive reservoir characterisation and modelling and increased engineering manpower.

To help you to increase the profitability of your unconventional resources, SGS offers a variety of innovative services.

SGS multi-scale shale characterisation service

Our multi-scale shale characterisation service assesses the mineralogical, geochemical and geomechanical properties of shales based on drill cuttings and cores. The integration of the rock analysis with wireline log and seismic data enables the assessment and identification of sweet spots in shale plays.

Shale and tight sands mineralogy services

SGS’s applied mineralogy services are optimised for applications in the oil and gas industry and use a combination of industry leading analytical tools. Our services include:

  • Automated mineralogical quantification QEMSCAN
  • Clay speciation determinations XRD
  • High resolution scanning electron imaging SEM
  • Large scale mineralogical characterisation of cores HYPERSPECTRAL IMAGING
  • High volume bulk elemental analysis XRF, ICP-AES
  • Trace elemental investigations ICP-MS

Niche and routine analytical methods are available.

Geomechanical rock properties

We use nanoindentation technology to determine the Young’s Modulus, hardness and brittleness of rock fragments. We combine this information with information on mineralogical composition, obtained from the QEMSCAN, and calibrate it to wireline logs. This allows us to determine the average geomechanical properties of shales and their heterogeneities based on drill cuttings. Using wireline log data, we upscale the geomechanical properties to reservoir scale and use this data to calibrate the seismic inversion.

Quantitative seismic interpretation

Recent advances in seismic interpretation have vastly increased the application of seismic data. Seismic interpretation can be used to visualise key properties of unconventional reservoirs, facilitating the delineation of zones with favourable characteristics for production. SGS offers services ranging from seismic processing to quantitative interpretation and inversion, both as standalone services and as part of integrated subsurface studies.

Coal bed methane services

We provide a comprehensive service package to support the exploration and exploitation of CBM and CMM plays. We are experienced in coal quality analysis and can define the methane production potential. SGS and its partner, Raven Ridge Resources, have developed workflows that integrate the laboratory data with 3D geological, geochemical and maturity modelling and production forecasting.

Laboratory gas analysis services

SGS routinely performs analyses of natural gas compositions both in the laboratory and in the field. These analyses can be combined with advanced techniques such as isotopic ratios, advanced mineralogy and physical testing of the source rock. This allows you to obtain vital information about the origin of the gas and details on reservoir continuity, compartmentalisation and migration.

SGS offers the following gas analyses:

  • Desorption isotherm studies
  • Sample preparation
  • Determination of rock-fluid compatibility and regained gas permeability
  • SARA analysis
  • Gas chromatography (GC)
  • Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS)
  • Diamondoid analysis
  • Fluorescence
  • Total petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH)
  • Headspace analysis
  • Biomarkers
